"Apply for 2nd Semester National Scholarship by June 17"

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] From the 18th, the application for the first round of the 2021 academic year second semester national scholarship will begin for university students, including new, transfer, and returning students.

On the 17th, the Ministry of Education and the Korea Student Aid Foundation announced that applications for the national scholarship will be accepted from 9 a.m. on the 18th until 6 p.m. on June 17.

The national scholarship is an income-linked scholarship provided by the government to university students whose income and assets are below a certain level and who meet academic criteria. The scholarship amount is determined based on the monthly recognized income calculated from the income, assets, and debts of the student and their household members (parents or spouse), and the results will be notified via mobile phone and email starting in June.

The national scholarship supports students in income support brackets 1 to 8 (based on 200% of the median income for a four-person household) with an annual amount ranging from 675,000 to 5,200,000 KRW. To receive the national scholarship, students must have a grade of B or higher in the previous semester. Students from basic livelihood security or near-poverty classes can apply with a grade of C or higher, and students in brackets 1 to 3 may have the grade requirement relaxed up to two times to a C grade considering their academic environment. New students, transfer students, returning students in their first semester, and students with disabilities are exempt from the grade requirement.

Current students, new students, transfer students, returning students, and re-enrolled students can apply through the Korea Student Aid Foundation website or mobile application. Applicants for the national scholarship must complete consent for household member information provision and submit documents by 6 p.m. on June 21.

Since the support bracket review involves checking the income, assets, and debts of the student and their household members together, consent for information provision is required. Consent for household member information provision can be given using a joint certificate on the Foundation’s website. If consent was given after 2015, it can be omitted.

If household members have difficulty using the joint certificate due to overseas residence, old age, or other reasons, documents can be submitted by mail or fax, or by visiting local centers. If the information entered during application differs from official information such as resident registration data or Supreme Court family relation registration data, documents such as a family relation certificate or resident registration copy must be submitted through the Foundation’s website or mobile app. If document submission is required, a text message will be sent within 1 to 3 days after application, and it can also be checked on the asset website.

Detailed information related to national scholarship support can be found on the Foundation’s website and through the call center. One-on-one customized face-to-face consultations are also provided by visiting Korea Student Aid Foundation centers nationwide.
