[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] As the Japanese government’s plan to discharge contaminated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean raises concerns, it has been confirmed that fish containing radioactive substances exceeding the standard levels were caught again in the waters off Fukushima.
According to the Asahi Shimbun on the 20th, cesium measuring 270 becquerels (Bq) per kilogram was detected in rockfish caught on the 1st of this month in waters about 37 meters deep off Minamisoma City, Fukushima Prefecture.
This is 2.7 times the allowable limit for food set by the Japanese government (100 Bq per kilogram).
Earlier, on February 22 of this year, cesium measuring 500 Bq per kilogram was detected in rockfish caught in the waters off Fukushima as well.
On the 19th, the Japanese government’s Nuclear Disaster Response Headquarters ordered restrictions on the shipment of rockfish in Fukushima Prefecture.
This is the first time in over two years since February 2019 that the Japanese government has restricted shipments of seafood from Fukushima Prefecture.
