[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yoo Dong-gyun, Mayor of Mapo-gu, is making steady progress with the ambitious project to plant 5 million trees by 2027 as part of efforts to save the planet.

To commemorate the 76th Arbor Day, Mapo-gu announced that on the 9th it held a ‘Relay Tree Planting’ event to bring hope for tomorrow to residents exhausted by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

This event was conducted as part of the ‘5 Million Trees Planting’ initiative, which the district has been promoting over 10 years to allow residents to fully enjoy green welfare.

To comply with COVID-19 prevention guidelines, only a small number of participants took part at each location, while tree planting was carried out in relay style across various sites in the district to reflect on the significance of Arbor Day.

Starting from ‘Ahyeon Green Space’ located at the eastern end of Mapo-gu, the tree planting proceeded sequentially every hour at eight locations including ‘Gyeongui Line Forest Trail Sogang University Station’, ‘Danginri Power Plant Park’, and ending at ‘Sangamsan’ at the western end.

Through this, a total of 5,500 plants were planted, including large trees such as Quercus dentata and Styrax japonicus, shrubs like Euonymus alatus and Buddleja davidii, as well as flowers including pansies and hydrangeas, bringing Mapo-gu one step closer to becoming a clean air forest.

A child who participated in the tree planting event said, “I hope the trees we planted hard today will help reduce fine dust.”

Furthermore, Yoo Dong-gyun, who actively participates in tree planting with the belief that the environment is a precious asset to pass on to future generations, visited all eight relay locations on the day and planted trees together with residents.

Meanwhile, the district aims to plant 5 million trees in Mapo-gu by 2027 through the 5 Million Trees Planting project.

In particular, last year, a total of 810,000 trees were planted, exceeding the 2020 target of 470,000 trees by 172%, and in the first quarter of this year, 117,141 trees were planted, achieving 27% of this year’s target.

Mayor Yoo Dong-gyun said, “Planting trees is like planting the future,” adding, “Leaving a good environment for future generations is of utmost importance, so I hope everyone will take an interest in nurturing and managing the trees planted today so that Mapo-gu can be reborn as an eco-friendly green city.”
