[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor You Deok-yeol) has enrolled all 340,000 residents in bicycle insurance.
As the number of cyclists increases and safety accidents become frequent, the district has taken steps to provide bicycle insurance for all residents so that local residents can use bicycles with peace of mind.
Earlier this year, the district revised the "Ordinance on the Promotion of Bicycle Use in Dongdaemun-gu, Seoul" to establish the legal basis for the insurance, and from March 27, residents have been able to enjoy the benefits by enrolling in the insurance.
People residing in Dongdaemun-gu are automatically enrolled in the insurance without any separate procedures.
The coverage period is from March 27, 2021, to March 26, 2022, during which insured persons are covered nationwide.
Thus, Dongdaemun-gu residents can receive coverage for bicycle accidents including ▲ 10 million KRW for death ▲ 10 million KRW for permanent disability ▲ 300,000 to 700,000 KRW for injury diagnosis requiring more than 4 weeks ▲ 200,000 KRW for hospitalization consolation (if hospitalized for 6 days or more) ▲ up to 20 million KRW for bicycle accident fines ▲ up to 2 million KRW for attorney fees. However, those under 15 years old are excluded from death coverage, and those under 14 years old are excluded from fines and attorney fees coverage. Insurance claims can be filed within 3 years from the date of the accident, and overlapping claims with other insurances are allowed.
Mayor You Deok-yeol of Dongdaemun-gu stated, “We have enrolled all residents in bicycle insurance to ensure they can ride bicycles with peace of mind,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to create a safe Dongdaemun-gu and a community where residents can enjoy leisure activities without worry.”
