In September 2018, Maezawa officially announced the DearMoon Project together with Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX and CEO of Tesla. The project, planned for 2023, involves a 3-day flight to the moon, orbiting the moon, and then returning to Earth over another 3 days.
The travel expenses for the 8 selected participants will be fully covered by Maezawa, who is reported to have raised travel funds after selling most of his ZOZOTOWN shares to SoftBank and resigning in 2019.
