[Taboleo] Sedan-like 'Sophistication'... Comfortable yet Dynamic Genesis GV70

[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] The last puzzle piece of Hyundai Motor Company's Genesis brand internal combustion engine lineup, the 'GV70,' has finally been unveiled. The GV70 is the second Genesis sports utility vehicle (SUV) following the GV80. Although it is a mid-size SUV smaller than the GV80, it boasts a youthful and sporty charm. You could say it exudes the appeal of a 'young dad.' We had the chance to get an early look at the Genesis GV70, which will be delivered to customers in January next year.

◆Design Defined by 'Sophistication'

The first impression upon seeing the GV70 from a distance was that it looked like a sedan. Of course, up close it was clearly an SUV, but its sleek and sporty design was reminiscent of a sedan. This was a different feeling compared to the sturdy and elegant GV80.

The most eye-catching feature was the curved lines. Especially the roofline that slopes sharply like a coupe explained why I initially confused the GV70 with a sedan. However, the Genesis identity remains intact. It is dynamic yet not excessive, with an elegance to it. The radiator grille, featuring the diamond-like 'G-Matrix' pattern, conveys a sense of strength, hinting at the GV70's performance.

The interior gave a refreshing impression in terms of design. Particularly, the control buttons on the center fascia were understated, and the design seemed integrated with the driver's seat, which was impressive. Although there are many empty spaces, it does not feel lacking. You could say it conveys the beauty of 'negative space.'

Sitting in the driver's seat and starting the engine, the instrument cluster immediately caught my attention. This is due to the 12.3-inch 3D cluster. As the name '3D' suggests, the information on the instrument cluster appears three-dimensional. Simply put, the speedometer and tachometer are displayed in the background, with other information layered in front. However, depending on the amount of incoming background light, the edges of the cluster can sometimes appear to shimmer slightly.

The GV70's overall length is 4,715 mm, which is 85 mm longer than Hyundai's 4th generation Tucson. This means the second-row space is ample. Even an adult male can sit comfortably. In particular, the large angle of the seatback is expected to provide comfort on long trips.

◆Driving Experience Defined by Comfort

Pressing the accelerator for a test drive, the power to accelerate was stronger than expected. The 3.5 turbo model I tested has a zero-to-100 km/h time of just 5.1 seconds.

The feeling throughout the drive was 'comfortable.' The power is sufficient, and the vehicle control performance is excellent. Noise and vibration levels are more like those of a sedan than an SUV. It offered the luxurious driving experience that can be felt in other Genesis models. But above all, the most impressive aspect was the significantly improved level of driving assistance performance.

First, the 'Highway Driving Assist (HDA) II' has changed remarkably. HDA II helps with lane changes by controlling the steering wheel when the turn signal lever is operated, and it also responds to vehicles cutting in at close range during low-speed traffic congestion. In short, lane changes can be made using only the turn signal. This feature was also available on the GV80, but it was difficult to operate. In my case, no matter how much I used the turn signal for lane changes, it rarely worked. But the GV70 is different. If you hold the turn signal firmly in the desired direction, it automatically changes lanes. It also judges whether a lane change is possible. For example, if you are in a solid line section, a warning message appears, and lane changes are not allowed. Now, it has truly become practical.

If you are considering purchasing the GV70, I highly recommend including the Head-Up Display (HUD). It has changed dramatically. First, the top displays the estimated arrival time, remaining driving distance, and real-time route guidance. The real-time route guidance also indicates which lane to use depending on the situation. It's almost unnecessary to look at the navigation. Additionally, road information such as 'Child Protection,' 'Wildlife Protection,' and 'Speed Limit' is also provided. Of course, the GV80's HUD had similar functions. However, the GV70's HUD features a significantly improved layout that intuitively conveys information even to first-time users.

Fuel efficiency was 8.6 km/L in normal mode driving, and 7.2 km/L in sport mode driving, which involved somewhat aggressive driving for performance testing. The manufacturer’s stated combined fuel efficiency is 8.3 km/L. The GV70 is a vehicle recommended for young dads in their 30s and 40s. It offers basic athletic performance and excellent driving assistance capabilities. Although it is smaller than the GV80, the space is sufficient unless you frequently enjoy family camping or outdoor activities every week. Moreover, its youthful and sporty design, which children would also like, adds to its appeal.
