[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yudonggyun) selected six recipients of the Citizen Award who have quietly worked hard for the local community and presented plaques at the ‘27th Mapo Citizens' Day’ event held on the 23rd.

Since 1992, the district has been selecting and awarding Citizen Award recipients to honor exemplary citizens who serve as role models for all residents. This year marks the 29th selection of Citizen Award recipients, with candidate recommendations received since June and a judging committee held in September.

Through the judging committee, in-depth evaluations were conducted on 19 candidates across six categories: 2 for Culture Award, 2 for Sports Award, 1 for Honorable Parent Award, 2 for Filial Piety and Good Deeds Award, 7 for Volunteer Award, and 5 for Regional Development Award, resulting in the final selection of Citizen Award recipients.

For the Culture Award, Jeon Woon-kyung, the ritual master of the Wau Gongminwang Shrine Preservation Society, was selected for realizing ‘ritual autonomy’ by serving as a ritual execution committee member of the Gongminwang Shrine since 2006, enabling residents to independently conduct the Gongminwang Shrine rituals, and contributing to the promotion of local cultural arts and creative development of traditional culture.

The Sports Award went to Seo Kyung-won, director of the Mapo-gu Disabled Sports Association, who represented Mapo-gu as a weightlifting athlete for five years from 2008, won gold medals at the National Disabled Sports Competition, and participated in the torch relay of the 100th National Sports Festival and the 39th National Disabled Sports Festival last year, enhancing the district’s honor and prestige.

The Honorable Parent Award was given to Kim Chun-ja, head of the Saemaul Women’s Association in Mangwon 1-dong, who has long cared for her spouse with brain damage caused by an accident around 2006, raised three children excellently, and actively practices various volunteer activities for community development.

Park Ok-shin, a resident of Seogyo-dong, received the Filial Piety and Good Deeds Award for her devoted care of her mother, who is turning 100 this year and has mobility difficulties, while also participating in various volunteer activities as a local community leader and a member of the Gyeongui Line Forest Trail volunteer group, recognized for her contributions to neighbors.

Meanwhile, the Volunteer Award, which has been the most competitive every year, was awarded to Park Jeong-hwan, head of the Saemaul Movement Mapo-gu Branch, who has been actively engaged in quarantine volunteer work to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and safety patrol activities, and has consistently practiced neighborly sharing by delivering rice, briquettes, fire alarms, mosquito repellents, and more to marginalized neighbors.

Park Kyung-sik, chairman of the Barugesalgi Committee in Hapjeong-dong, received the Regional Development Award for his efforts as a member of the Jeoldusan Martyrs’ Holy Site Support Hapjeong-dong Social Welfare Fund Operating Committee, selecting fund recipients and discovering beneficiaries to support low-income and vulnerable groups, ensuring proper use of social welfare funds, and contributing to creating a pleasant residential environment through neighborhood voluntary cleaning and street flowerpot installations.

Meanwhile, the six citizens who have illuminated Mapo will be finally registered as recipients in the Citizen Award Hall of Fame in the lobby on the first floor of Mapo-gu Office.

Mayor Yudonggyun of Mapo-gu said, “I sincerely thank the citizens who have worked hard for Mapo with exceptional effort and volunteer spirit,” and added, “Mapo-gu will also strive to be a strong shield that harmonizes with citizens and takes responsibility for them, so that the hard work of the awardees who do not hesitate to help the district will not be in vain.”
