Google to Operate K-Content Innovation Program Worth 115 Billion Won

[Asia Economy Reporter Jin-gyu Lee] On the 29th, Google announced that it will operate the 'K-reate' program worth 115 billion KRW (100 million USD) over the next year to promote the development of the Korean digital content (K-content) ecosystem.

The K-reate program was established to support the creativity and growth potential of Korean digital content application developers and to help the digital content app ecosystem grow further.

Through the K-reate program, Google plans to support developers providing digital content services such as webtoons, web novels, music streaming, and e-books, as well as offer extensive benefits including price reductions to users of these services.

The greatest benefits will be provided to 'K-users' who actively consume digital content. Google Play will launch various marketing campaigns to enable K-users to enjoy a wider range of digital content.

Discount benefits on webtoons, web novels, music streaming, and other services, as well as Google Play Points accumulation promotions, will be offered. The K-reate program expands beyond developer support programs like the 'Google Play Indie Game Festival' and the 'Changgu Program' to provide tangible benefits to users as well.

Support for K-developers and K-creators will also be provided simultaneously. In addition to financial support for small and medium-sized web novel, webtoon, and e-book distributors and digital content app developers, consulting for global expansion and global marketing support programs will be offered to broaden the base of the K-content industry and promote content diversity.

Purnima Kochikar, Head of Global Business Development at Google Play, said at a media briefing, "Korea is an innovative country that has produced digital content developers expanding worldwide, such as Watcha and Todosuhak. Through the K-reate program, Google will help Korean digital content app developers grow within the Android ecosystem and support users in connecting with excellent digital content."

Meanwhile, regarding Google's decision to mandate the internal payment system 'In-App Payment (IAP),' Kochikar explained, "We will invest in developing Google Play as an ecosystem that fosters coexistence by charging fees to enable developers to utilize new tools and consumers to use a safe and reliable platform."
