Former Samsung C&M Executive Yoon In-jong, Samsung's First Safety Manager, Appointed Vice President of Safety at Coupang
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Coupang has strengthened its safety management system by consecutively recruiting two executives with over 30 years of experience in the safety management field.
On the 24th, Coupang announced that it had hired Yoo In-jong, former Executive Director of Samsung C&T Resort Division, as Vice President of Safety, responsible for safety management of Coupang’s delivery infrastructure including logistics centers and delivery camps. Vice President Yoo worked at Samsung Group for 33 years and was the first safety manager to become an executive at Samsung. He is also widely known as the first person in Korea to earn a doctoral degree in disaster safety.
Before joining Coupang, Vice President Yoo was in charge of safety at Everland while working in the Resort Business Division of Samsung C&T Resort Division. He was recognized for his contributions to industrial accident prevention and received the Industrial Medal awarded by the government in 2018. He began his career as a safety manager at Samsung Corning in 1987 and managed safety accident prevention at Everland through Samsung Everland and Samsung C&T Resort Division. His efforts to establish a safety culture at Everland are also famous for reducing the rate of customer and employee accidents lower than that of Tokyo Disneyland in Japan. Vice President Yoo graduated from Seoul National University of Science and Technology and earned a Ph.D. in Disaster Safety from Myongji University.
Additionally, Coupang recruited Park Dae-sik, former Director of the Gyeonggi Northern Branch of the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, as Executive Director in charge of Safety and Health Audits. Executive Director Park is an expert in safety and health who has been responsible for risk prevention at workplaces nationwide for 30 years since joining the Occupational Safety and Health Agency in 1988. Before joining Coupang, Executive Director Park worked in various departments of the Safety and Health Agency, conducting more than 20 risk assessment training sessions annually across the country, helping analyze workplace hazards in advance and implement appropriate preventive measures. He has published numerous papers on safety management methods for equipment and machinery such as forklifts and tower cranes, which can lead to major accidents if not properly managed. He is recognized as an expert combining theory and practice, having completed master’s and doctoral courses at Yonsei University and Korea National University of Transportation.
Vice President Yoo and Executive Director Park will leverage their long experience in industrial safety to focus on building infrastructure to protect Coupang employees’ safety. Executive Director Park expressed his ambition, saying, "I want to make Coupang’s workplaces, where more than 50,000 people work daily across 600,000 pyeong of infrastructure nationwide, the safest workplaces in Korea." Vice President Yoo said, "It is important to have a sense of purpose to thoroughly eliminate risk factors," adding, "We will do our best to ensure employees can work in a safer environment."
