[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A man in his 30s who caused the death of his biological son, whom he was raising alone after divorce, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
On the 18th, the Criminal Division 1 of the Daejeon High Court (Chief Judge Lee Jun-myung) announced that it dismissed the defendant's appeal in the murder case of A (38).
On December 31st last year, around 4:30 PM, A strangled his son B (then 3 years old) at their home in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, causing him to lose consciousness.
B was transported to the hospital following a report by his biological mother and others, but ultimately passed away the next day.
According to the prosecution, A was raising his son alone after divorcing his wife, and there was no evidence of abuse prior to the incident.
The first trial court sentenced him to 10 years in prison, stating, "The crime is grave as if he arrogantly held the power over the child's life and death." The defendant claimed, "The sentence is too heavy."
The appellate court explained the sentencing, saying, "Since he expressed resentment toward his ex-wife and killed his biological son, the blame is significant. The victim must have absolutely trusted his father," and added, "Because the victim could not resist the defendant's tragic violence and had to end his short life, a heavy sentence is inevitable."
