[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] Typhoon Maysak, the 9th typhoon currently moving northward in the waters off Seogwipo, Jeju, will come closest to Jeju this evening (the 2nd) before striking the southern coast early on the 3rd.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, as of 9 a.m. today, the typhoon is moving north at 18 km/h about 310 km south of Seogwipo. It has developed into a very strong typhoon with a central pressure of 945 hPa and maximum wind speeds of 162 km/h (45 m/s). Looking at the maximum instantaneous wind speeds at key locations, Wando-eup recorded 104 km/h, and Jeju's Witseoreum and Sinan Gageodo recorded 79 km/h. A heavy rain advisory is in effect for the Gyeongsang region, with some areas experiencing heavy rain exceeding 20-30 mm per hour accompanied by thunder and lightning.

The typhoon will pass closest to Jeju around 7 p.m. and then make landfall on the southern coast. It is most likely to move inland between Geoje and Busan, then pass through the eastern inland of Yeongnam before exiting through the East Coast of Gangwon. The time when the typhoon will be closest to Busan is 2 a.m. on the 3rd, and Daegu at 3 a.m. Due to the relatively fast movement of the typhoon, it is expected to be closest to Uljin around 6 a.m.

Nationwide Impact Regardless of Typhoon's Detailed Path
Storm Surge Possible on Southern Coast, East Coast, and Jeju Coast

Regardless of the typhoon's detailed path, this typhoon is expected to be strong and large in scale, affecting the entire country. Currently, Jeju, including its surrounding seas, is under a typhoon warning as of 10 a.m., and a typhoon advisory has been issued for parts of Jeonnam and the southern offshore areas of the West Sea. Starting this afternoon, warnings will extend to the southern regions, and by early morning on the 3rd, typhoon alerts will be issued for Seoul and parts of Gyeonggi and Incheon, as well as the central and northern regions.

Jeju will experience the greatest impact from the typhoon on the morning of the 2nd, while the rest of the country is expected to face the critical period from night through early the next day. Especially, since this coincides with the highest tide period of the year (spring tide) until the 7th, special precautions are necessary along the coasts. When the typhoon passes through the low-pressure area, the rise in sea level combined with high waves may cause storm surges along the southern coast, east coast, and Jeju coast.

Precipitation is expected to be 100-300 mm (with some areas exceeding 400 mm) in Gangwon Yeongdong, the east coast of Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam, eastern Jeolla, Jeju Island, and Ulleungdo; 100-200 mm in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Gangwon Yeongseo, Chungcheong (excluding southern Chungcheong), Jeonnam (excluding eastern parts), and Gyeongbuk (excluding the east coast). Other regions are also expected to receive 50-150 mm of rain. Maximum instantaneous wind speeds are expected to be 108-180 km/h (30-50 m/s) along Jeju and the Gyeongsang coast; 72-144 km/h (20-40 m/s) in Gangwon Yeongdong and southern regions (excluding the Gyeongsang coast and western Jeonbuk); and 36-108 km/h (10-30 m/s) in other areas.

Following Typhoon No. 9, Typhoon No. 10, 'Haishen,' is also moving northward. This typhoon is expected to bring rain to South Korea around the 6th to 7th. Although its path is still highly variable, it is large and strong and may affect the entire country. Rainfall has been forecasted in the Korea Meteorological Administration's medium-term forecast. The Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters has issued a nationwide crisis alert at the severe level as of 9 a.m. and raised the response level to emergency stage 3.
