[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun District, attended the ‘40th Anniversary Seoul Commemoration Ceremony of the May 18 People's Uprising’ held at 10 a.m. on the 18th at the Seodaemun Prison History Hall Plaza.

The event, hosted by the May 18 Democratization Movement Seoul Commemoration Association and organized by the 40th Anniversary Seoul Commemoration Ceremony Committee of the May 18 People's Uprising, was attended by Mayor Yoo, who led the Bu-Ma Democratic Uprising, which ignited the democratization movement in the 1980s. He endured severe torture and various hardships from the military regime, narrowly escaping death, and was released on probation after a military trial, an experience marked by great pain.

Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun District, stated, “The ‘Spirit of May’ that blazed in Gwangju has become a great foundation for the democratization of the Republic of Korea and is engraved as a symbol of hope and solidarity in the hearts of the people living here today. The state must promptly and thoroughly investigate the truth, and the people must honor, inherit, and develop the noble spirit of that day together with the power of truth remembered collectively.”
