[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Seok-jin] Yoon Mo, a police superintendent general (50) who was called the "Police Chief" in the so-called 'Seungri group chat' during the Burning Sun club incident in Gangnam, Seoul, has been sentenced to prison.
According to the court on the 9th, at the sentencing hearing held yesterday at the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 27 (Presiding Judge Kim Seon-il) for Yoon's case involving violations of the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, the prosecution requested a prison sentence of 3 years, a fine of 7 million KRW, and a confiscation of approximately 3 million KRW.
On that day, the prosecution emphasized, "We hoped the defendant would face his mistakes, reflect, and repent, but he did not at all," and added, "He must be severely punished for damaging the pride and honor of his fellow police officers."
In his final argument, the defense attorney stated, "The defendant did not gain any actual benefit and did not exert any undue pressure," and requested, "Please show leniency so that the defendant can complete his public service career."
Yoon himself appealed, saying, "I clearly state that I have no connection with the Burning Sun club and that there was no collusion."
Yoon is accused of informing Yoo In-seok, former CEO of Yuri Holdings and business partner of Seungri, about a crackdown after receiving a report of a violation of the Food Sanitation Act at 'Monkey Museum,' a pub established by Seungri and Yoo in Gangnam, Seoul, in 2016, by checking the crackdown details through Gangnam Police Station officers.
Additionally, he is accused of receiving stocks worth tens of millions of KRW from Jeong Mo, former CEO of Nokwon CNI (formerly Cubes), in exchange for helping to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Jeong.
He is also charged with evidence tampering for instructing Jeong to delete messages on Telegram and other mobile phone messages during the Burning Sun investigation.
The sentencing hearing for Yoon is scheduled for the 24th of this month.
