[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Sohn Hak-kyu, Standing Election Countermeasures Committee Chairman of the Minsheng Party, stated on the 31st regarding the controversy over the number 2 proportional representation candidate, “I announced that I would step down as the leader of the Bareunmirae Party as of the 24th of last month and serve as a regular member in white armor,” adding, “There is no excuse for the fact that I was appointed as the number 2 proportional representation candidate last week and was perceived as ‘greedy.’”

At a press conference held at the National Assembly that day, Chairman Sohn said, “I honestly confess that rather than the greed of becoming a member of the National Assembly through proportional representation, I had the ambition to become a member of the National Assembly to push for constitutional amendments for multi-party coalition politics,” and “I deeply apologize to the public and party members for causing concern regarding the Minsheng Party’s proportional representation order.”

Chairman Sohn explained, “My conviction is that to end the imperial presidential system and the extreme confrontational politics of the two major parties and to open politics that actively plays a role for the economy and people’s livelihood, a constitutional amendment for the 7th Republic must be made in the 21st National Assembly,” and “This was the reason I reluctantly accepted the nomination management committee’s request to apply for proportional representation. However, my failure to properly read the social atmosphere of distrust in the National Assembly and politicians is inexcusable. I can only ask for the public’s leniency.”

Chairman Sohn added, “This election will be an important election that will determine the future of our country’s politics,” and “Although the COVID-19 situation may obscure the stern judgment on the Moon Jae-in administration’s failures and the corrupt opposition parties, I believe that the great people of the Republic of Korea, who overcame dictatorship and hardship to achieve today’s prosperity and democracy, will make a wise judgment for a better future.”

Chairman Sohn emphasized, “We must now change the power structure. The National Assembly must become the center of politics and form the cabinet,” and “The nominal imperial presidential system must now come to an end.”

Chairman Sohn stated, “The National Assembly must change first. Despite enduring all kinds of humiliation and ridicule, I have protected the Bareunmirae Party as a centrist party and a practical party for people’s livelihood,” and “The Minsheng Party, which inherits this spirit, will firmly maintain the third political zone of the Republic of Korea.”

Chairman Sohn said, “The United Future Party, a conservative force that solely protects vested interests including conglomerates and large corporations, what have they done for the development of the country so far?” and “The Democratic Party of Korea came to power through the Candlelight Revolution and has called for the eradication of deep-rooted evils, but they have fallen into ideological and factional logic and have plunged people’s livelihood into distress. They are trapped by the new deep-rooted forces represented by former Minister of Justice Cho Kuk, and they will face the stern judgment of the people in this general election due to their mismanagement and hypocrisy.”

Chairman Sohn said, “The only parties that are fairly fielding both constituency candidates and proportional representation candidates in this general election are the Minsheng Party and the Justice Party,” and “The Minsheng Party is not an ideological party. It is a people’s livelihood party that aims to protect national interests and improve the lives of the people. It is a centrist party that chooses the right path without leaning left or right. Only when the people unite their strength behind the Minsheng Party will true political reform be possible.”
