[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jong-gil] Director Bong Joon-ho's film Parasite has surpassed $50 million in North American box office revenue.
Hollywood media outlet Deadline reported on the 27th (local time) that the film's North American box office earnings exceeded $50 million (approximately 60.7 billion KRW), stating that it is "still benefiting from the Academy Awards effect." The exact amount will be known once the latest revenue figures from the box office tracking site Mojo are reflected.
After winning four Oscars including Best Picture, Parasite expanded its screenings to 2,001 theaters. Although the number has decreased to 1,324 theaters currently, audiences continue to visit.
Among foreign-language films released in North America, only three films have earned more than Parasite: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon ($128.1 million), Life is Beautiful ($57.2 million), and Hero ($53.7 million). The media outlet predicted, "If the box office momentum continues, it is possible to surpass Hero and Life is Beautiful to become the second highest-grossing foreign-language film ever."
Parasite has also succeeded at the box office in Japan and the United Kingdom. In particular, it topped the weekend box office in Japan for two consecutive weeks.
