National Climate and Environment Council Holds Town Hall Meeting in Cheongju
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Ban Ki-moon, Chairman of the National Climate and Environment Council, stated on the 29th, "Fine dust measures must enter the lives of the people so that they can feel and accept them."
Chairman Ban made these remarks while attending the 'Chungbuk Town Hall Meeting to Solve the Fine Dust Problem' held at the Urban Regeneration Hub Center in Sangdang-gu, Cheongju.
He pointed out, "The fine dust problem in Cheongju is among the worst in the country. While there are geographical factors, it is necessary to focus on the fine dust we ourselves generate."
He continued, "The waste we produce and even a single drop of tap water at home are related to electricity consumption and ultimately affect fine dust levels," emphasizing, "We need to be aware that every action in daily life impacts the environment."
Chairman Ban said, "Fine dust policies should not be top-down, where the president or ministers decide and disseminate them to the public. Instead, policies determined through public participation and discussion should be implemented by the government to achieve short-term effectiveness."
The National Climate and Environment Council, an organization under the president officially launched on April 29 last year, leads domestic and international cooperation to solve fine dust problems and collects public opinions to propose to the government.
Last September, the National Climate and Environment Council designated the four months with high fine dust occurrence in winter and spring (December to March) as the high-concentration fine dust season and announced a public policy proposal focusing on intensive reduction management in seven sectors. Reflecting public opinions gathered from the town hall meetings, the Council plans to release a second policy proposal in the first half of this year.
