[JIMFF] 6 movies you do not want to miss this year

If you are at a film festival, you will probably hope to watch a film that will last in your heart forever. Here are three features and shorts, recommended by programmers Jeon Jin-soo and Hong Young-joo, which you should not miss at this year’s JIMFF.

Short Film Recommendations
"Mixtape": A two-minute thirty-second-long ultra-short film which with great impact tells of the excited emotion a boy feels while he collects music his father used to listen to for the friend he likes next door. A variety of emotions, including the boy’s thrill and nostalgia, are expressed within the short running time.
"Ananda - A Musical Journey in Ghana": This is a documentary film which contains the accounts of performances put on by French singer named Ananda in Ghana as well as the scenery and people of Ghana. This film is far from being boring like documentary films usually are and is rather light and cheerful. May I say it is light in an experienced way?
"Mom’s Vacation": Unlike foreign shorts, Korean shorts tend to be like practice pieces created ahead of making features. So it has been difficult to find a domestic film which brings out the appeal of shorts. In that sense, “Mom’s Vacation” is not an easy musical film to make but has managed to turn out to be a refreshing production.

Feature Film Recommendations
"Nostalgia": It is personally my favorite film at this year’s JIMFF. I kept thinking, ‘Yes, that’s what a movie should be like,’ while watching it. It is said to have cost less than 10 million won to produce so it shows that it is the passion for ideas, not money, that makes a good movie.
"Electro Ghetto": This is the latest production by Uli Edel of “Last Exit to Brooklyn,” a film I let out an exclamation over even when I hear its title. Based on the true story of Germany’s most popular rapper Bushido, this is a strong film just like the director’s previous works.
"All You Need is Klaus": I like the Beatles but I didn’t know a man named Klaus Voormann drew the jacket for their album so I’m glad to have gotten to know about this movie. As a programmer, I’m the happiest when through movies, I discover hidden stories about things I like yet did not know well about.
