Remembering a Mother of Three Killed in Shooting
Actors Including Ruffalo and Sykes Take Collective Action
Controversy Over Trump’s Immigration Policy Reignites
A political message appeared on the red carpet at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards held in Los Angeles. Small badges attached to the dresses, tuxedos, and handbags of actors were engraved with the phrase "BE GOOD." According to reports from the Associated Press and The New York Times on January 11, several Hollywood stars, including Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, Natasha Lyonne, and Jean Smart, wore these badges and made public appearances at the ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Pop star and actress Ariana Grande wore a badge that read "ICE OUT."

This badge is a symbol to commemorate Rene Good, a 37-year-old American citizen who was killed by gunfire from an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and to condemn the abuse of state power during immigration enforcement. She was the mother of three children and is reported to have been killed while returning home after dropping her youngest son off at elementary school.
Comedian and actress Wanda Sykes said in an interview with the entertainment outlet Variety, "This badge is for a mother who was killed by an ICE agent," adding, "We need to raise our voices, and we need to stop this administration." Mark Ruffalo, who played the Hulk in the Marvel movie "Avengers" series, strongly criticized President Donald Trump and his immigration policies. At the awards ceremony, he accused President Trump of disregarding international law and continued his criticism in strong terms.

Jean Smart, who won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes for the HBO Max series "Hacks," said at a press conference after her win, "I know there are people who feel uncomfortable when social or political issues are mentioned at events like this," but added, "Right now, I am speaking not as an actress, but as a citizen and a mother." It is unusual for actors to collectively express political messages at Hollywood awards ceremonies, which are typically celebratory in atmosphere. Analysts say that this year's Golden Globe Awards became a symbolic stage highlighting the conflicts surrounding state power and immigration policies that have spread throughout American society.

Meanwhile, protests have continued across the United States following the death of Rene Good. A GoFundMe campaign set up to support her family raised about 1.5 million dollars (approximately 2.1 billion won) in just three days, and the funds will be deposited into a trust account for the bereaved family. The Trump administration has maintained that the actions of the ICE agent in this incident were in self-defense. However, human rights organizations and protesters are strongly opposing this stance, arguing that excessive enforcement and overreaction led to the tragedy. The controversy over hardline immigration policies has further intensified after another shooting during an immigration enforcement operation in Portland, Oregon, the day after the incident, which left another person injured.
