Saha Police Seizes 10 Million Won and Two Boxes of Fruit
Bribery Attempted Against Officer Investigating Perjury
A man in his seventies, who handed cash to the police officer investigating him, now faces additional charges of bribery.
On the 18th, Busan Saha Police Station announced that they had arrested a man in his seventies on charges of perjury and bribery after he attempted to halt an investigation by sending a box containing cash to the officer in charge.
According to the police, Mr. A (male, in his 70s) is accused of sending a box containing 6 million won in 10,000-won bills to Sergeant B on September 8. At the time, a taxi driver entered the police station's civil affairs office carrying the box, saying he had been asked to deliver it and was looking for Sergeant B.
Sergeant B, finding the situation suspicious, opened the box together with the taxi driver and discovered it was filled with bundles of cash. Based on the description of the sender provided by the taxi driver, it was confirmed that the person who handed over the box was Mr. A, the suspect Sergeant B was investigating for perjury. This was further verified through footage from the taxi’s black box camera.
Previously, in May, Mr. A had filed a fraud complaint against two acquaintances, but the promissory note he submitted turned out to be forged, leading to an investigation against him for perjury instead. The day the cash box arrived at the police station was also the day Mr. A was scheduled to appear for questioning.
However, Mr. A did not stop at just one attempt. On the next scheduled appearance date, October 2, he again sent a fruit box and an envelope containing 4 million won in cash, using the same method instead of appearing in person. The letter included a note saying, "I am not in good health and cannot attend," along with language implying further offerings. He later called the civil affairs office directly, asking them to confirm whether the cash and fruit had been received.
Sergeant B stated, "I found it suspicious from the beginning, so I recorded the moment I received the box from the taxi driver on video," adding, "I was shocked that someone would try something like this in this day and age."
After Mr. A repeatedly failed to respond to summons, the police obtained a warrant and arrested him, adding charges of perjury and bribery before detaining him on the 18th. During questioning, he reportedly claimed, "I sent it as a holiday greeting ahead of Chuseok. Why is this a crime?"
A representative from Saha Police Station stated, "Offering money or valuables to a police officer constitutes bribery, regardless of the amount."
