US and Russian Top Diplomats Hold Phone Call to Discuss Preparations for Trump-Putin Summit

Rubio: "Summit Is Crucial for Resolving the Russia-Ukraine War"

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced that the top diplomats of the United States and Russia held a phone conversation to discuss preparations for a summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On October 20 (local time), the Russian Foreign Ministry released a statement saying that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke by phone. According to the ministry, the two ministers engaged in constructive discussions on specific measures to implement the agreements reached during the phone call between President Trump and President Putin on October 16.


The US State Department also stated in a press release issued by the Principal Deputy Spokesperson that the two ministers discussed follow-up measures stemming from the recent phone conversation between the two leaders. Furthermore, the State Department said that Secretary Rubio, during the call, emphasized the importance of the upcoming US-Russia summit as an opportunity for US-Russia cooperation to advance a sustainable resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war, in line with President Trump’s vision.


Previously, President Trump and President Putin agreed during a phone call to hold a summit in Budapest, Hungary, to discuss the issue of Ukraine. The specific schedule and agenda for the summit are expected to be determined through in-person consultations between Minister Lavrov and Secretary Rubio. Earlier, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov expressed hope that the summit would provide an opportunity to discuss not only the Ukraine issue but also bilateral relations between the two countries.


P?ter Szijj?rt?, Hungary’s Foreign Minister, where the US-Russia summit will be held, announced that he would visit Washington, D.C. on October 21. Minister Szijj?rt? is expected to hold working-level discussions with the US government in Washington regarding preparations for the upcoming summit.
