"Accelerating Top 3 AI Power"... Ministry of Science and ICT to Meet Weekly with Companies and Field Experts

The Ministry of Science and ICT has officially begun on-site communication efforts aimed at realizing its goal of making South Korea one of the top three global powers in artificial intelligence (AI). The ministry plans to visit AI and digital companies, as well as research institutes, every week to listen to voices from the field and reflect them in policy decisions.

On July 8, Vice Minister Ryu Jemyung of the Ministry of Science and ICT visited the Korea Artificial Intelligence & Software Industry Association (KOSA) to meet with industry representatives and discuss "public-private cooperation measures for the early realization of the top three AI powers." Later the same day, during a visit to the Korea Information Security Industry Association (KISIA), he met with security companies to share strategies in the field of cybersecurity that will support the sustainability of the AI industry.

This round of field visits marks the first step in concretizing AI industry policies, which the Ministry of Science and ICT is pursuing as a core national agenda item under the new administration. The government plans to continue on-site communication by holding regular meetings with companies, academia, and research institutes in the AI sector each week, focusing intensively on key issues according to current priorities.

The KOSA meeting was attended by Chairman Cho Joonhee, as well as representatives from LG AI Research, Naver Cloud, FuriosaAI, Upstage, and other companies specializing in AI models, cloud, and AI semiconductors. The participants shared insights on global AI competition trends and conveyed policy demands such as regulatory improvements, infrastructure expansion, and talent development to enhance the competitiveness of Korea's AI industry.

Vice Minister Ryu stated, "AI is both a key tool that determines national competitiveness and a driving force for genuine growth. As the new government has made AI a core national agenda item, we will incorporate the vivid voices from the field into our policies and push forward without setbacks."

Cho Joonhee, Chairman of KOSA, responded, "The private sector will also align with government policy and work together to secure global AI competitiveness and drive innovation in the ecosystem."

The subsequent information security company meeting was attended by Cho Youngcheol, Chairman of KISIA, as well as representatives from AhnLab, Igloo Security, and Eroun&Company. The participants shared directions for technology development and the creation of an industrial ecosystem to respond to increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, and agreed on the need to strengthen security capabilities through public-private cooperation.

Vice Minister Ryu emphasized, "To become a true AI-leading nation, we must have robust information protection and security technologies as a foundation. We will spare no effort to ensure that the security industry becomes a pillar supporting Korea’s leap into the ranks of the top three AI powers."

Starting with these meetings, the Ministry of Science and ICT plans to launch a full-fledged AI on-site communication series, visiting major AI companies and research institutes in succession. Comprehensive discussions are expected to take place on securing core AI technologies, revitalizing the industrial ecosystem, nurturing talent, and revising regulations for safe utilization.
