Rapid Promotion: 'Chungju Man' Kim Seontae Becomes Grade 6 Team Leader in Just One Year

Establishment of New Media Team in Chungju City, Appointed as Team Leader

Kim Seon-tae (37), a public official at Chungju City Hall known as the "Chungju City PR Man," is set to be promoted to team leader just one year after his last promotion.

On the 3rd, CJB Cheongju Broadcasting reported that a New Media Team was recently established in Chungju City. The team leader of this New Media Team is Kim Seon-tae, the Chungju City PR Man. Kim Seon-tae entered public service in 2016 as a level 9 public official and was rapidly promoted to level 6 within seven years. He has now taken on the role of team leader just one year after that promotion.

Kim told the media, "We have plans to collaborate with major YouTubers. We will shoot a series of videos introducing Korean tourism and domestic tourist spots, and we are also planning to try live broadcasting." He added, "The biggest priority is to raise the brand awareness of Chungju City," and said, "Secondly, I think we can increase trust in the administration," expressing his intention to connect with citizens.

Regarding his past pledge to retire if Chungju City's YouTube channel reached over one million subscribers, he clarified, "Retirement does not mean leaving Chungju," explaining, "It meant that I wanted to move to another department." Currently, the official YouTube channel of Chungju City has about 773,000 subscribers. Kim is responsible for the entire process including filming, planning, casting, appearing, and editing. The channel is characterized by its use of various memes to deliver city administration promotions in a fun and easy-to-understand way. Breaking away from the stiff atmosphere typical of local government YouTube channels, this channel has gained great popularity by delivering laughter and information to subscribers with its ‘B-grade sensibility’ in planning.

Earlier, he appeared on MBC’s entertainment program "Radio Star" and shared a story about receiving criticism from some of the public after revealing his annual salary. Kim explained, "(Since I am a public official) you can roughly guess the salary by looking at the pay scale," and said, "When I disclosed on the show that my annual salary was 50 million won, it became a topic of discussion." There were comments saying 50 million won was too much and others saying it was too little at the same time.

When asked if he felt a gap between being a public official and a broadcaster, he replied, "Honestly, I don’t feel it at all." He continued, "When I film with other broadcasters, I don’t even think about comparing their earnings. Instead, I feel it in the environment. When I get a casting call, they say ‘Please come,’ but a civil complaint caller says ‘You come out.’ They want to beat me up," he joked.
