Imsil-gun Holds Ceremony for 'Osugae's Millennium History UN Organization Registration'

The Protagonist of Osu's Dog Story Registered with the UN at the End of June

Commemoration Ceremony at Osu Companion Nuri on the 29th... History Lecture Also Scheduled

Imsil-gun, Jeonbuk Province, will hold a celebration event to commemorate the registration of Osugae, the protagonist dog of the 'Osu Legendary Dog' story, in the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO) breed registry.

The county announced on the 27th that it will hold the "Osugae UN FAO Breed Registration Commemoration Event" at 3 p.m. on the 29th at Osu Banryeonuri in Osu-myeon. Osugae is widely known as the dog that saved its owner, who was engulfed in flames, by wetting its fur with water.

The event will begin with special lectures including the registration in the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) of the UN FAO and resource sovereignty (Dr. Kim Seung-chang), ▲A historical and cultural review of ancient Korean dog breeds and Osugae (Professor Park Seung-gyu), ▲Utilization of Osugae as a healing companion animal (Professor Kim Ok-jin), and ▲Globalization strategies using companion animal content (Professor Chae Soo-chan).

The commemorative ceremony will start at 5 p.m. with National Institute of Animal Science Director Lim Ki-soon presenting the certificate, followed by a report on the breed registration process, a commemorative speech, and the unveiling of the registration monument.

Research on Osugae breeding began in 1995 by local residents. The Osugae restoration project has been led by the Osugae Research Institute for over 30 years.

This year, Osugae was approved as a regionally adapted breed through the review of the National Institute of Animal Science’s Animal Genetic Resources Center. Subsequently, on June 30, the breed was registered in the UN FAO Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS) as Osugae/Republic of Korea (Dog).

Chairman Shim Jae-seok of the operating committee explained, "It is very meaningful and historic that Osugae, the protagonist of the famous Osu dog legend featured even in elementary school textbooks, has been registered with a global organization. We prepared this event to commemorate this achievement."

Starting with Osugae, the county is accelerating companion animal-related projects in Osu-myeon, including ▲Osu Legendary Dog Park ▲Companion Animal Theme Park ▲Companion Animal Support Center ▲World Famous Dog Land Development Project ▲Restoration of Kim Gae-in’s Birthplace ▲Osu Pet Memorial Park ▲Dedicated Agricultural and Industrial Complex for Pet Supplies.

Meanwhile, the 39th Osu Legendary Dog Cultural Festival will also continue this year. The county is focusing efforts on promoting the 2030 "World Companion Animal Industry Expo" centered around the Osu Legendary Dog Theme Park.

County Governor Shim Min said, "This UN FAO registration marks a milestone in the thousand-year history of Osugae. We will do our best to make Osu-myeon a global sanctuary for companion animals and establish it as an international companion animal-friendly city."
