Lee Seungman Documentary 'Geon-guk Jeonjaeng' Nears 200,000 Cumulative Viewers

Middle-aged and Older Audiences Lead Box Office Success

The documentary film 'Geon-guk Jeonjaeng' that highlights the life and politics of former President Syngman Rhee is on the verge of surpassing 200,000 viewers. According to the integrated box office data on the 11th, the film attracted over 50,000 viewers on Lunar New Year's Day, ranking 4th at the box office.

'Geon-guk Jeonjaeng' has maintained a position around the top 5 since its release on the 1st. It even reached 3rd place at one point. As of the 10th, the tenth day after its release, the cumulative number of viewers is over 180,000. The seat occupancy rate (the ratio of viewers to the number of seats allocated for the movie) from the 1st to the 10th is 29.2%, the highest among films released this year.


The main audience for this film is people in their 50s. According to CGV's age-based reservation distribution, those in their 50s account for 45.8%, the highest proportion. This is followed by people in their 40s (26.1%), 30s (19.4%), 20s (7.9%), and teens (0.8%), showing a decreasing trend among younger generations.


Directed by Kim Deok-young (59), who spent three years making 'Geon-guk Jeonjaeng,' the film is composed of photos and video materials of former President Rhee, interviews with people around him including his daughter-in-law Jo Hye-ja, and experts. Notably, the film features footage obtained directly by Director Kim from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, showing President Rhee's copper parade on 'Avenue of Heroes' in Manhattan, New York, in 1954, which is being revealed for the first time in this film.
