'Crying Apeach' Fades into Memories... KakaoTalk to End 'Free Emoji' Service

KakaoTalk to End Free Emoji Service
Number of Emojis Drastically Reduced from 116 to 34 in Version 10.5.0

The basic 'emoji' service that was free on KakaoTalk is disappearing. Emojis are graphic icons that have been provided for free since the launch of KakaoTalk, gaining attention for allowing users to express emotions using Kakao Friends, KakaoTalk's official characters such as 'Muzi', 'Con', and 'Apeach'.

On the 30th, Kakao recently decided to end the free emoji service within KakaoTalk. Previously, with the 10.5.0 version update, KakaoTalk reduced the number of basic emojis from 116 to 34. Kakao has announced plans to discontinue the remaining 34 emojis as well. However, the emoji functions built into Galaxy and iPhone devices will still be available for use.

Earlier, Kakao clarified that emojis are a different concept from the 'emoticons' commonly used by users. Emojis are round icons representing emotions through facial expressions, hands, etc., and are distinct from the emoticons sold by KakaoTalk. Kakao explained, "We have carried out a feature overhaul to provide a better user experience and functionality," adding, "The provision of basic emojis will be phased out."
