Lee Rae-kyung, honorary director of Other Hundred Years, who was known for past remarks such as the 'Cheonan ship self-destruction,' has resigned from the position of Innovation Committee Chair of the Democratic Party of Korea.
On the 5th, Director Lee stated through the media, "I deeply regret that the judgments and opinions I hold have become the target of witch-hunt style political strife," and added, "Since the ongoing controversy is a burden to the Democratic Party as a public party, I intend to voluntarily relinquish my position as head of the Innovation Committee."
He continued, "I earnestly hope that this will serve as an opportunity for a fresh start, and that the Democratic Party will find the right person to lead the way in overcoming the nation's crisis and moving toward new politics," and "I sincerely ask the citizens who love the Democratic Party to stand firmly with the party. With a heart praying before history, I wish to resolve the current situation caused by me."
Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced at the Supreme Council meeting that morning that Director Lee had been appointed as the chair of the party's Innovation Committee. However, controversy arose when it was revealed that Director Lee had previously claimed on his social networking services (SNS) such theories as the 'Cheonan ship self-destruction theory' and 'U.S. election interference theory.' Director Lee resigned from the chair position about nine hours after his appointment.
