Kim Ki-young, CEO of Artificial Society, thought an opportunity had arrived when OpenAI unveiled the 'ChatGPT Plugin' last March. The ChatGPT Plugin is a kind of platform that brings external services such as websites or applications into ChatGPT. OpenAI reviews companies that apply for registration and gradually allows participation. CEO Kim believed that if his company's literacy improvement service were integrated into ChatGPT, it would create optimal synergy, so he applied immediately after the plugin was released. He said, "With the emergence of generative artificial intelligence (AI), human writing skills are rapidly being replaced by AI, but 'reading,' which involves receiving information and critically analyzing it, still remains a unique domain. I hope that even reading will not be replaced by AI, so I want to make sure our service is included in ChatGPT, which is widely used."

Artificial Society is a generative AI startup in the education sector. Since its establishment in 2021, it has been developing generative AI technology. It has already secured several patents and provides various automated educational services to academia and the education industry. Its core technologies range widely, including ultra-lightweight AI models that analyze video and audio acquired on mobile devices directly on the device, as well as content production through large-scale AI models.

The main service is 'ZenQ,' launched last January. ZenQ is a content creation tool that automatically generates English passages and questions at the level of the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). After entering the topic of the text, users input the type of text, difficulty, length, etc., and a passage matching these criteria is generated. The questions vary, such as finding sentences that are out of context among the options or matching word meanings. It is also linked with ChatGPT. In March, they built 'EduGPT,' which automatically generates Korean passages and questions. CEO Kim explained, "By generating text without copyright issues, we can reduce the time and cost involved in producing educational content," adding, "Using ZenQ, more than 90% of the process of creating existing educational content, including manuscript writing and question creation, can be replaced by automation."

The literacy improvement mobile application 'Lesser' is another core service of Artificial Society. Lesser diagnoses users' content reading abilities based on AI eye-tracking technology and provides optimized training programs accordingly. When users open the Lesser app on their smartphones or tablets, a text of about 1,000 characters and questions appear. While the user reads the text and answers the questions, AI tracks the user's gaze through the smartphone camera. It analyzes how many words are recognized at once, how many times the user returns to previously read text, and more. Based on this, it diagnoses six literacy levels including attention, reading speed, and accuracy rate.

Generative AI Replaces Content Labor... Also Acts as AI Tutor

CEO Kim said that the development of generative AI such as ChatGPT will bring significant changes to the education industry in the future. He said, "In a situation like South Korea's, where the population is declining, education that nurtures ordinary citizens as in the past is no longer sufficient; education that allows each student to fully realize their abilities is needed. Generative AI will greatly reduce the personnel and content costs spent for this purpose."

He also said that generative AI tutors will replace or assist teachers. CEO Kim said, "Highly personalized learning data will naturally lead to AI tutors who know the students best and can guide them in a positive direction." He explained, "A classroom with 20 students having AI tutors will actually provide a learning experience equivalent to having 20 teachers."

However, he cautioned against excessive optimism from an educational rather than industrial perspective. There is concern that misuse of generative AI might lead students to rely on it even for parts that require independent thinking and reflection. CEO Kim predicted, "Future education will entrust memorization to generative AI and focus on developing critical thinking skills to judge the accuracy of information."
