[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Sergeant Yoon Jin-ho of the Seomyeon Precinct, Busanjin Police Station, a 13-year veteran police officer, went out to wash his car for the first time in a while on his day off on September 30.
Needing cash for the car wash fee, he went to an ATM at an apartment shopping center in Millak-dong, Suyeong-gu around 4:02 PM, where a young man immediately caught his attention.
The young man was continuously depositing cash into the ATM while looking at Telegram messages.
Yoon, who had previously worked in the Intelligent Crime Investigation Team before his current precinct duty, immediately sensed something was wrong.
When Yoon revealed his identity as a police officer and questioned the young man, Mr. A, about the ‘crime,’ a flustered Mr. A admitted he was depositing money into the account shown in the messages.
Yoon arrested Mr. A, who was acting as a voice phishing collector, on the spot for fraud under the Criminal Act and violation of the Resident Registration Act, then handed him over to officers dispatched from the Gwangmin Precinct of the Southern Police Station.
According to the Busan Police Agency, the amount Mr. A had not yet transferred, 7.6 million won, was immediately recovered, and although 5 million won had already been sent before Yoon’s arrest, a payment suspension order was promptly issued.
The Criminal Investigation and Violent Crime Team of the Busan Southern Police Station is investigating the circumstances of the crime with Mr. A and is expanding the investigation into the group that orchestrated the crime.
