[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Jung-wan] Amid continuous heavy rain, two campers who ignored the safety personnel's advice to evacuate were eventually trapped by the swollen valley water and requested rescue. Rescuers took an 8-hour round trip to save the campers.
According to MBC on the 10th, at around 1:30 a.m., the Yangyang Fire Department in Gangwon Province rescued two campers trapped by suddenly swollen rainwater in a valley in Hyeonbuk-myeon, Yangyang, Gangwon Province.
Responding to the report, rescuers at the scene avoided the strong current and rescued the campers via a forest road that took 8 hours round trip.
A safety officer at the scene explained to MBC, "We told the people who were pitching tents and playing in the water by shouting and gesturing that they needed to evacuate because it was dangerous, but they ignored us."
It is known that they had been living in tents there for three days. Their tents were set up not far from the valley, and they resisted the safety personnel's advice to evacuate, eventually becoming trapped by the heavy rain and requesting rescue.
The fire authorities requested that people refrain from camping in mountainous areas immediately after rain. They also urged that in case of being trapped, people should promptly call 119, avoid jumping into even shallow water themselves, and use ropes or life jackets to assist in rescue.
