[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] A worker at a shipyard in Ulsan suffered severe burns after catching fire and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
According to the shipbuilding industry on the 13th, around 11 a.m. the previous day, a worker in his 40s, Mr. A, an employee of Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, caught fire on his clothes while performing electrical work in the substation at the Ulsan headquarters construction site. Mr. A walked along the road toward other colleagues with the left side of his work uniform on fire, and employees who noticed this ran over with three fire extinguishers and put out the fire in about 20 seconds.
During the initial suppression, some of the fire extinguishers did not function properly, creating a tense situation. Mr. A sustained burns on multiple parts of his body and was transferred to a hospital in the Seoul area, where he is scheduled for surgery. A Hyundai Mipo Dockyard official stated, "We understand that there is no serious threat to life at this time," and added, "We will investigate the cause of the fire and establish measures to prevent recurrence." The official also said, "Fire extinguishers are inspected monthly," and "We plan to check the safety conditions at the site at the time."
