[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] On the 1st, the Democratic Party of Korea criticized Kim Byung-joon, the Standing Election Committee Chairman of the People Power Party, for saying about Cho Dong-yeon, the first recruited talent of the Democratic Party and co-chair of the election committee, that she was “wearing something similar to a combat uniform with a very pretty brooch on it,” calling it “an outrageous remark that damages the honor of South Korean soldiers and professional women.”
Senior Spokesperson Ko Yong-jin said in a briefing that day, “Describing a recruited talent of a political party as an ornament reflects his worldview and level of consciousness,” adding, “Kim Chairman’s remarks are anachronistic and a serious insulting language toward the person who is a security expert and a female educator.”
Senior Spokesperson Ko raised his voice, saying, “Graduating from the Korea Military Academy and walking the path of a South Korean soldier, then taking on a new path in the field of aerospace security is itself an achievement and capability,” and “This outrageous remark is not a criticism of the Democratic Party’s recruited talent, but a belittlement and denial of the dreams and challenging spirit of our youth who are active in their professional fields.”
He continued, “It is obvious without asking how the youth affiliated with Yoon Seok-yeol’s election committee would be seen through Kim Chairman’s outdated perception and distorted view of talent.”
Senior Spokesperson Ko said, “We have no intention whatsoever to belittle the talents of other parties,” and questioned Professor Lee Soo-jung of Kyonggi University’s Department of Criminal Psychology, who joined Yoon’s election committee, by asking, “Does Co-Chair Lee Soo-jung also agree with Kim Byung-joon Chairman’s brooch remark?”
Earlier, Kim Chairman said in an interview with CBS Radio’s ‘Kim Hyun-jung’s News Show’ in the morning, when asked “How do you evaluate Co-Chair Cho?” “The Democratic Party is good at putting on appearances regardless of substance,” and “She wears something similar to a combat uniform with a very pretty brooch on it.”
When the host asked, “Is it an accessory?” he replied, “It felt like an accessory. It looks good now, but she hasn’t led any major mass movements or managed large organizations, nor has she fully demonstrated her capabilities as a scholar yet, right? So, the fact that such a person is now serving as the standing co-chair of the election committee makes me think it’s just like a brooch pinned on a combat uniform aimed at people in their 20s and 30s.”
