[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] The Chinese government expressed condolences on the news of the passing of former President Roh Tae-woo.


Zhao Lijian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on the 26th, "We express our deep condolences on the death of former President Roh and sincerely offer our sympathies to his family."


Former President Roh normalized diplomatic relations with China in August 1992. In September of the same year, he visited China and met with Jiang Zemin, General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Yang Shangkun, President of China, and Li Peng, Premier of China.


Former President Roh pursued northern diplomacy, including establishing relations with the Soviet Union during the post-Cold War period.


Spokesperson Zhao evaluated, "Former President Roh was friendly toward China and greatly contributed to the establishment of Korea-China diplomatic relations and the development of bilateral relations."
