[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The proposal to establish new elementary and middle schools in Songdo International City, Incheon, which was once rejected by the Ministry of Education review, has passed the re-examination.

The Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education announced on the 7th that the proposals to establish the tentatively named Haeyang 3 Elementary School and Haeyang 4 Middle School were both approved at the recent joint investment review held by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

Accordingly, Haeyang 3 Elementary School is scheduled to open in September 2024, and Haeyang 4 Middle School in March 2024.

In the review held in May, the Ministry of Education rejected the proposals for these schools due to a shortage of nearby housing supply and the division of school sites, but after all conditions were met, the establishment was approved again.

Currently, the Songdo 6 and 8 districts are experiencing concentrated apartment development projects. In the 6th district, 1,503 households in Block A10 were sold in January, and 2,647 households in Blocks A9 and A17, scheduled for sale in September to October, are expected to move in starting June 2024.

With the approval of this review, it is expected that the issues of overcrowded classes and long-distance commuting in the Songdo 6 and 8 districts, where these schools are located, will be resolved. Currently, the average number of students per class in all middle schools in Songdo is 33, exceeding the 30 students per class standard considered appropriate by the Metropolitan Office of Education.

An official from the Incheon Metropolitan Office of Education stated, "Although the establishment of elementary and middle schools has been approved, there is a growing demand from residents for the establishment of high schools," adding, "We will supplement the conditions for establishing high schools in the future and promote the establishment of schools as soon as possible."
