Establishment of the 'Ulsan Mipo Smart Green Industrial Complex 5-Year Action Plan'
Korean New Deal Demonstration, 'Project Team' Launch Early Next Year
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] The Ulsan-Mipo National Industrial Complex, a key industrial complex in the large-scale industrial complex renovation project in the Ulsan area, is transforming into a ‘Smart Green Industrial Complex’.
On March 24, Ulsan City announced on the 9th that it has established the ‘Ulsan Mipo Smart Green Industrial Complex 5-Year Implementation Plan’ (2022?2026) with the Ulsan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation for the ‘Ulsan-Mipo National Industrial Complex,’ which was designated as a ‘Smart Green Industrial Complex’ simultaneously with its selection in the ‘Industrial Complex Renovation’ contest.
The Smart Green Industrial Complex project aims to transform existing industrial complexes into competitive and environmentally friendly manufacturing spaces by adding energy self-sufficiency and eco-friendly projects to the ‘Smart Industrial Complex,’ which focuses on building digital infrastructure, serving as a demonstration site for the Korean New Deal.
The Smart Green Industrial Complex initiative began in February 2019 with Changwon and Banwol-Sihwa Industrial Complexes as leading complexes, and currently, seven industrial complexes nationwide are operating under this program. In March of this year, Ulsan, Busan, and Jeonbuk were newly selected in connection with the industrial complex renovation project. Full-scale operations are expected to begin next year.
The vision of the Ulsan Mipo Smart Green Industrial Complex implementation plan is a ‘Smart-Carbon Neutral-Safe Industrial Complex.’
The project goals are set as △Digital, △Energy Self-sufficiency, △Eco-friendliness, and △Job Creation.
The basic strategies are structured as △Digital (establishing a manufacturing innovation foundation through the introduction of digital infrastructure utilizing Information and Communication Technology (ICT)), △Green (energy innovation such as low-carbon, high-efficiency through the convergence of green and digital), and △Human (creating an industrial complex where young workers grow into smart talents and want to live).
The detailed projects include 14 initiatives (6 new projects and 8 linked to the industrial complex renovation), such as the ‘Digital Twin-based Process Innovation Simulation Center Construction’ (digital strategy), with a total project cost of 352.3 billion KRW.
To promote the project, the ‘Ulsan Mipo Smart Green Industrial Complex Project Group’ will be launched early next year at the Ulsan Regional Headquarters of the Korea Industrial Complex Corporation.
An official from Ulsan City said, “We expect a production increase of 300 billion KRW, creation of 1,500 jobs, and a reduction in safety accidents through this project,” adding, “We are pooling our capabilities to maximize economic ripple effects and to transition the region’s key industries into future industries.”
