Biden Administration Launches AI Research Task Force

[Asia Economy Reporter Jo Yujin] The U.S. Biden administration has launched a public-private task force (TF) to allow AI researchers to utilize government data on population, healthcare, driving, and more.

On the 10th (local time), according to U.S. economic media outlet The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the U.S. government established the "National AI Research Resource TF," composed of 12 members including officials from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, the National Science Foundation, academia, and private sector experts. From the private sector, Andrew Moore, Google's Cloud AI Director, participated.

The TF aims to share data held by the U.S. government?such as demographics, healthcare, and driving?with AI researchers and to develop strategies for building foundational infrastructure for AI research resources.

Seturaman Panchanathan, Director of the National Science Foundation, stated, "It is time to accelerate the pace and scale of AI advancement."

The Journal explained that the TF was established as part of efforts to maintain U.S. technological superiority, following Congress's directive to set it up under the "National Artificial Intelligence Initiative" legislation.

Lynn Parker, Assistant Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and co-chair of the TF, explained that the goal is to submit a roadmap to Congress for shared research infrastructure that the government can provide to external AI researchers.

On the 8th, the U.S. Senate passed the "America COMPETES Act," which focuses $250 billion (approximately 280 trillion won) on aggressively fostering key industries such as AI and semiconductors.
