Selected for Children's Science Experience Space Contest, Korea's Only Dinosaur Science Museum Stands Tall
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Hyun] Haenam-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Myeong Hyeon-gwan) announced on the 16th that it has been selected for the expansion project of children's science experience spaces hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, securing a project budget of 2 billion KRW to establish a children's science museum themed on dinosaurs at the Haenam Dinosaur Museum.
The children's science experience space expansion support project is promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT to create an environment where children, the future leaders, can be exposed to science from an early age and develop imagination and creativity. Through evaluation and on-site inspection, five local governments including Haenam-gun were finally selected, and Haenam is the only one with a science museum themed on dinosaurs.
Haenam-gun plans to convert the existing bird ecology hall within the museum into a science museum, creating a space where children can meet their favorite dinosaurs through play and experience, and unfold scientific imagination.
Outdoors, the science museum will feature a dinosaur playground providing an environment for active play, while indoors it will be composed of zones such as ‘Mollatji Yong (Ecological Experience Zone)’, ‘Guhaejwo Yong (Physical Play Zone)’, and ‘Nollaowo Yong (Curiosity Exploration Zone)’ where children can understand dinosaur ecology and scientific principles.
The bird ecology hall is a building with a total area of 832㎡ within the Haenam Dinosaur Museum, and through this public contest project, it will not only revitalize the facility but also mark a new leap as the nation's first dinosaur science museum.
Additionally, an outdoor water play facility (water park) is scheduled to open this summer at the Haenam Dinosaur Museum, significantly expanding experiential facilities that children and entire families can enjoy, transforming it into a family-oriented complex tourist attraction.
The Haenam Dinosaur Museum, established in 2007, is the largest dinosaur museum in Korea, located at the Natural Monument No. 394 ‘Haenam Hwangsan-myeon Uhwang-ri Dinosaur, Pterosaur, and Bird Footprint Fossil Site.’
It was registered as a nationally important scientific and technological data by the Ministry of Science and ICT in 2021, and on its 15th anniversary, it is attempting to recreate the museum's value through various academic events, introduction of cutting-edge technology content, establishment of experiential facilities, and improvement of convenience facilities.
Governor Myeong Hyeon-gwan stated, “Through the establishment of a children's science experience space in the dinosaur field, we expect to create various synergies in connection with the Haenam Dinosaur Museum,” and added, “We will strive to promote the value and status of the Haenam Dinosaur Museum as a major hub where children learn about dinosaurs and science and experience it with their families.”
