South Korea Ranks 3rd Globally in SNS Usage... Naver 'Band' Most Used


[Asia Economy Reporter Buaeri] South Korea's social media usage rate was found to be the third highest in the world.


According to the 'Social Media Status and Outlook' report by KT Economic Management Research Institute and Digital Rep DMC Media on the 7th, South Korea's social media usage rate in the first quarter of this year was 87%, about 1.8 times higher than the global average (49%).


By country ranking, it was third following the United Arab Emirates (99%) and Taiwan (88%), and within the top 10 were Malaysia (81%), Singapore (79%), Hong Kong (78%), Argentina (76%), New Zealand (75%), Thailand (75%), and Sweden (73%). Additionally, China was 72%, the United States 70%, and Japan 65%.


The number of domestic social media users was approximately 35.5 million.


According to Mobile Index's survey of domestic Android operating systems as of June this year, the monthly active users (MAU) of domestic social media showed Naver 'Band' with 16.92 million users as the highest. This was followed by Instagram with 11.49 million, KakaoStory with 9.96 million, Facebook with 9.85 million, Naver Cafe with 5.1 million, and TikTok with 2.94 million.


Nielsen Korean Click's survey of monthly average users of domestic social media by age group in the first quarter showed that teenagers preferred Facebook (2.21 million), Instagram (1.91 million), and Twitter (860,000) in that order.


For those in their 20s, Instagram (4.93 million), Facebook (3.86 million), and Band (1.78 million) were preferred, while those in their 30s favored Instagram (4.4 million), Band (3.19 million), and Facebook (2.68 million). For people in their 40s and 50s, Band and KakaoStory ranked first and second respectively.


The average monthly usage time per person for domestic social media in the first quarter was longest on Twitter at 594 minutes, followed by Facebook at 567 minutes and Instagram at 441 minutes.
