[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kang Juhee] Cooking expert Baek Jong-won showcased various dishes using abalone.
On the 18th broadcast of SBS entertainment program 'Delicious Rendezvous,' Baek Jong-won and the Nong Avengers were seen making steamed abalone, butter-grilled abalone, and abalone porridge using abalone from Wando, Jeollanam-do.
The first dish was steamed abalone, and Kim Heechul was in charge of slicing the abalone. Baek Jong-won said, "I won't say anything. Do as you please," but he kept interfering whenever Kim Heechul sliced the abalone.
Seeing the improperly prepared abalone, Baek Jong-won pointed out, "Who prepared this?" and Kim Heechul expressed his long-held frustration, causing laughter.
While Kim Heechul was making the seasoned soy sauce, Baek Jong-won prepared butter-grilled abalone with Park Jaebum, Yang Sehyung, and Kim Dongjun. Baek Jong-won gave a tip, "Usually, many people add butter first when making butter-grilled abalone. That leads to failure because the butter burns. You have to saut? the garlic first, then add the butter."
After tasting the finished butter-grilled abalone, Yang Sehyung said, "It's really delicious. The whole garlic scent makes it savory rather than greasy. There's no aversion to the garlic aroma."
Kim Dongjun admired, saying, "The texture is chewy." Park Jaebum, who had previously disliked seafood, praised the dish, saying, "I can eat abalone like this."
Next, Baek Jong-won explained the 7-minute abalone porridge recipe. He said, "If you use frozen abalone innards, it smells fishy. Don't add them. You have to use fresh abalone innards."
When Kim Dongjun said he wanted to learn how to make abalone porridge, Yang Sehyung questioned, "Is someone you like sick?" Kim Dongjun replied, "I once failed making abalone porridge," and Yang Sehyung joked, "Did you break up because of that?" causing laughter.
Baek Jong-won made two versions of abalone porridge and asked the members to guess the secret ingredient in the porridge. Yang Sehyung guessed, "I think it contains kelp for umami," and Park Jaebum, after tasting the porridge, guessed, "Butter was added."
Yang Sehyung, Kim Heechul, and Kim Dongjun also said, "It seems like cream or milk was added. It tastes like risotto."
The secret ingredient in the abalone porridge was milk. Baek Jong-won showed a surprised expression when the members guessed milk correctly without seeing the cooking process. He said, "Did I add too much? It's anticlimactic," adding to the laughter.
