[San Francisco (USA) = Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] Samsung Electronics unveiled the palm-sized foldable phone 'Galaxy Z Flip' that folds and unfolds vertically. Having pioneered the history of foldable phones with the Galaxy Fold, Samsung Electronics introduces the second foldable phone, Galaxy Z Flip, which is more affordable and practical. The company aims to increase the accessibility of foldable smartphones while growing the 'foldable' category into a new source of revenue to lead the next decade.

On the 11th (local time), Samsung Electronics held 'Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2020' at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, USA, and unveiled the 'Galaxy Z Flip.' It will be sequentially released in global markets starting from the 14th, priced at 1.65 million KRW.

Notae Moon, President of Samsung Electronics' Mobile Communications Business, said, "Thanks to the enthusiastic response from consumers to the Galaxy Fold last year, we are introducing the 'Galaxy Z Flip,' which offers a new display, form factor, and user experience." He added, "The Galaxy Z Flip, which will play an important role in expanding the foldable category, will redefine the usability and user experience of mobile devices."

While the Galaxy Fold is a foldable phone that folds 'largely' up to 8 inches, the Galaxy Z Flip folds 'small' vertically. This enhances portability and provides excellent grip. It is small enough to hold in one hand, and when unfolded vertically, a 6.7-inch foldable glass display appears. The display uses 'Ultra Thin Glass' material, making the screen smoother and more durable than existing foldable phones. Except for the front camera located at the top center, the phone features the first hole display on a foldable phone that fills the entire screen, with an aspect ratio similar to a movie theater screen at 21.9:9.

The key feature of the Galaxy Z Flip is its hinge technology that allows precise angle adjustment. The Hideaway hinge technology helps users unfold the phone to the desired angle to take photos or enjoy content. Small and delicate components enable angle adjustment and allow smooth yet stable folding and unfolding. It also offers a 'freestop' folding function that can fix the angle between 70 degrees and 180 degrees. Nylon fibers finely cut to less than 1mm are placed above and below the hinge to protect against external foreign substances.

Samsung Electronics collaborated with Google to provide 'Flex Mode,' optimized for multitasking on the Galaxy Z Flip. When unfolded at a specific angle and stood up, the screen automatically splits into two; the upper screen displays photos or videos, while the lower screen allows photo settings and more. Users can preview photos and control camera effects while taking pictures. This feature will be supported in apps such as YouTube, Snow, and B612 in the future. On the 1.1-inch cover display that appears when folded, users can check smartphone status, time, notifications, calls, and even take selfies.

The Galaxy Z Flip is equipped with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory. It features a 10-megapixel front camera and a 12-megapixel dual rear camera. It is powered by an optimized 3300mAh dual battery and supports Samsung's unique wireless battery sharing function. It will be available in two colors: Mirror Purple and Mirror Black.

Samsung Electronics offers the 'Z Premier Service' to customers, which includes benefits such as one-time display damage insurance for one year, free protective film application once, and up to two on-site repair services within one year. Customers who purchase in February will receive a gift set consisting of a 'Galaxy Z Flip' case and pouch, created in collaboration with Find Kapoor.
