From Skyways to Transfer Hubs and Ground Transport
Announcement of Integrated Smart Mobility Solutions
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] The 'human-centered future city' envisioned by Chung Eui-sun, Executive Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, is a core vision for the group's transition into a smart mobility solutions company. It is Hyundai Motor Group's plan to provide a foundation that creates more value beyond the constraints of space and time.
On the 6th (local time), at the media conference of 'CES 2020' held in Las Vegas, USA, Executive Vice Chairman Chung stated, "Based on a new concept of mobility solutions, we aim to connect people in meaningful ways and create a future where quality of life is improved. We will continue progress for humanity."
The next-generation brand blueprint presented by Hyundai Motor that day can be summarized as a 'human-centered dynamic future city.' The three core mobility solutions are Urban Air Mobility (UAM), Purpose Built Vehicle (PBV), and Mobility Transfer Hub (Hub). Among these three solutions, Hyundai places particular emphasis on UAM. UAM refers to a solution that combines Personal Air Vehicles (PAV) and urban air mobility services to utilize air routes.
Chung Eui-sun, Executive Vice Chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, introduced Hyundai Motor's future mobility vision at the 'CES 2020' media conference held in Las Vegas, USA, on the 6th (local time).
At the event, Hyundai Motor unveiled the PAV concept 'S-A1' for the first time. The S-A1 is designed with electric propulsion vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) capabilities and can accommodate five people including the pilot. Using this, urban travel is possible without a runway. Hyundai plans to develop it further to enable autonomous flight in the future. Shin Jae-won, Vice President and Head of Hyundai Motor's UAM Division, said, "UAM will free people from ground traffic congestion and create time for meaningful and valuable activities that people enjoy."
Notably, the S-A1 was completed through collaboration with Uber, the world's largest mobility company, which adds significance. Eric Allison, Head of Uber Elevate, said, "Hyundai Motor is Uber's first partner in the UAM field among global automakers," emphasizing, "Combining Hyundai's manufacturing capabilities with Uber's technology platform will achieve a major leap in building an urban air network."
Another mobility solution, PBV, provides customized services to passengers while traveling on the ground to their destination. It reflects personalized design and can function as an urban shuttle as well as various spaces ranging from leisure areas like restaurants and cafes to essential facilities such as hospitals. The Hub serves as a focal point connecting UAM and PBV. The top floor has a PAV take-off and landing pad, and the first floor is equipped with a docking station connecting PBVs. UAM connects the sky and ground, PBV connects people on the road, and the Hub links these two mobilities, realizing a single mobility ecosystem.
